Nokia Offers RAW DNG Image Support!

Photograpers have a cause for celebration!

The Nokia Lumia 1020 and the new Nokia Lumia 1520 will be able to save your photos as lossless RAW files (in “DNG” format), allowing maximum flexibility when editing the images on your computer!

It is BIG DEAL because the 1020 and 1520 are the ONLY smartphones in the market that have RAW support!

This is what Adobe, the company that pioneered DNG RAW format say about Nokia's new found ability...

Is Nokia 808 PureView the next Disruptive Innovation?

Way back in 2009 I wrote about my experience in using a Bronica 120 camera, in "A Blast From The Past" I mention Christian Sandström; a young PhD in innovation management from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

After reading "The Rise of Digital Imaging and the Fall of the old Camera Industry" in Luminous-Landscape, I wrote to young Sandström...

"I am absolutely riveted  to my seat reading your recent article in The Luminous Landscape!

Working as a Picture Editors all this years in various newspaper, I was involved in implementing, pushing and selling digital conversions to Editors and bean counters! I also argued with digital people from Kodak and predicted their downfall :)

I will be writing about Bronica in my blog next week and would like your kind permission to quote part of what you say and may be to embed one or two slides show into my blog.  Looking forward to hear from you.  Kind regards  -  CY  "

41 Megapixel in a Nokia 808 Pure View Phone?!

When my nerdy friend call me excitedly to tell me about the new Nokia 808 PureView smart phone, with FORTY MEGAPIXEL; I thought he has either gone mad or April Fool has come early!

A quick check at dpreview told me he is still saint and I am sure today is only February 28!

It is true that Nokia, after years of loosing out to Apple's formidable iPhone, did a coup and announced that it has created a 41MP smartphone, the Nokia 808 PureView.

JPEG Noise & Artifact

In my previous article "JPEG Hell!" I show you how high JPEG compression in Paint Shop Pro can really damage your image file.

One of my young reader argued that he cannot see much damage when his image is being compressed in Photoshop, even at a very high compression / low quality setting.

He wonder if I can "show" him that JPEG in Photoshop really damage his original file!

Your wish is my command ;)

To do this demonstration I selected this "grab shot" I captured in K.L., 1998.

I was shooting a street market scene in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, this kind Malay family let me used their veranda for an overhead view.

While I was shooting, at the corner of my eyes I saw her with the baby... quick shot with my EOS1n and 80-200 at about 200mm.

What can I say? Just pure innocent.

I was surprise how well the ISO 400 Kodak Ektapress negative film rendered her flawless complexion so well!

The colour negative was scanned with my Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED.

Now, back to our JPEG noise demo...
